Synthesis of Aluminum-Magnesium Silicon Carbide Bricks and Properties and Uses of Refractory Preparation
Aluminum-magnesium silicon carbide brick is a synthetic material, its stoichiometric composition is in moles: Si 50%, C 50%, in mass: Si 70.04%, C 29.96%, and the relative molecular mass is 40.09.
Si-C binary system phase diagram, silicon carbide has no consistent melting point. In a closed system at a total pressure of 101 kPa, silicon carbide decomposes into graphite and a silicon-rich melt at 2735 °C. This temperature is also the maximum temperature for the formation of silicon carbide crystals. In an open system, silicon carbide begins to decompose at about 2300°C to form gaseous silicon and residual graphite, as shown in Figure 9-1.
Silicon carbide has two crystal forms: β-silicon carbide is an equiaxed crystal system with a sphalerite-like structure; α-silicon carbide is a hexagonal crystal system with a dense crystal arrangement. β-Silicon carbide transforms into silicon carbide at about 2100°C.
